What is Real World Value (RWV)?

Real World Value (RWV) is the umbrella term for everything a digital reward can redeem into that exists off-screen. It covers three categories: Real World Assets (RWA), Real World Services (RWS), and Real World Experiences (RWE). In the For-Gold economy, RWV is the standard a reward must meet before it counts as value at all.

Why the umbrella term exists

Digital economies have become fluent at issuing value and clumsy at delivering it. Loyalty programs mint points into accounts that quietly devalue over time, a pattern examined at length in our analysis of the future of loyalty programs. Speculative tokens trade against one another without ever touching a shelf, a service counter, or a stadium seat. Both systems answer the question of how value is issued. Neither answers the harder question of what the value becomes.

Real World Value names the answer. It is a taxonomy for the destination of a reward rather than its origin, and it exists because the For-Gold economy takes a deliberate starting position: a reward is only worth issuing if it can eventually leave the screen.

The three branches of RWV

RWV divides into three categories, each describing a different form that off-screen value can take.

Real World Assets (RWA)

Assets are the most established branch, and the one with the deepest institutional history. An RWA is a thing that exists and holds value independently of any platform — the subject of our foundational explainer on Real World Assets. When rewards are anchored to this branch, they become RWA Rewards, the reward class the For-Gold economy is built around.

Real World Services (RWS)

Services are value delivered as work performed for the holder. A reward that redeems into a service converts digital effort into someone else's professional time. Services are consumed rather than held, which makes them a distinct branch: their value is realised in the moment of delivery.

Real World Experiences (RWE)

Experiences are value delivered as access — events attended, places entered, moments lived through. An experience cannot be resold after the fact, and that is precisely its character as a branch of RWV: it is redeemed once, off-screen, and kept as memory rather than inventory.

Three branches, one standard. Assets are held, services are performed, experiences are lived. What unites them is that all three exist whether or not any application is open.

The off-screen test

If a reward cannot ultimately redeem into an asset, a service, or an experience that exists off-screen, it is not Real World Value. It is a number.

The test is deliberately blunt, and it sorts the reward landscape quickly. Cashback passes, narrowly, because currency is spendable off-screen, though it arrives in amounts too small to feel like wealth. Closed loyalty points generally fail, because they redeem only into the issuer's own catalogue at the issuer's own exchange rate. Purely speculative tokens fail by definition until the moment someone converts them into something real. RWV is the category for rewards that pass the test by design rather than by accident.

RWV as the redemption layer of the For-Gold economy

The For-Gold economy separates cleanly into three layers: earning, settlement, and redemption. Gold hunters earn through the For-Gold verbs — Play-For-Gold, Watch-For-Gold, Engage-For-Gold, Learn-For-Gold, Move-For-Gold, and the rest of the vocabulary catalogued in the For-Gold glossary. Everything earned settles to one ledger, Flashy Gold, which lives at flashy.gold and serves as the single reward currency across the Flashy properties.

RWV is the third layer — the one the first two exist to serve. Redemption is surfaced through ClaimYour.Gold, the portal where gold hunters see and claim what their Flashy Gold has become, and the redemption waitlist is open now. The taxonomy matters here because it disciplines the roadmap: every redemption route the network builds must land in one of the three branches. A proposed reward that lands in none of them is, by the house standard, no reward at all.

A standard before it is a slogan

Umbrella terms earn their keep when they constrain behaviour, and RWV is written to constrain. It commits the For-Gold economy to measuring every reward by its exit — by the asset it becomes, the service it summons, or the experience it unlocks — rather than by the size of the number on the screen. That commitment is also what separates digital gold as Flashy defines it from the broader crowd of digital reward instruments: the accounting is digital, but the value is not permitted to stay that way. A reward economy that adopts RWV as its standard accepts a harder engineering problem and a simpler promise. The number in the account is a claim on the world, and the system's whole job is to honour it.
